Savica Waterfall

The Savica waterfall in the Komarča wall is one of the most visited sights in Bohinj. Janez Vajkard Valvasor wrote about the Savica waterfall, and later also the famous Slovenian poet dr. France Preseren. Supposedly, at the rising sun at the Savica Waterfall, he drew inspiration for the most important Slovenian epic poem, Krst pri Savici. As early as 1807, the 78-meter-high Savica waterfall, which supplies the Sava River, was visited by the Austrian Archduke John of Habsburg, the grandson of Empress Maria Theresa. Today, from the starting point - Koča pri Savici mountain hut - a beautifully landscaped tourist trail leads to the waterfall. The ascent of 553 steps will take you to the waterfall in twenty minutes of walking through the forest. In between, benches are available to relax.

"On long summer days, when the sun's rays touch the falling water at dawn, a beautiful rainbow forms at the waterfall."

The valley of the Triglav seven lakes

The marked mountain path at the hut crosses the bridge over the Savica and at the crossroads we follow the signs for Komarča. Following a steep and here and there exposed, but well-protected and extremely scenic path, we first reach the Black Lake and then continue the path to the hut at the Double Lake (4-5 hours of walking). This path across Komarča actually opens the door to the valley of the Triglav Seven Lakes, and on to the very heart of the Julian Alps and the Triglav National Park.

Weather

The Savica waterfall and the weather are closely connected: the more water there is, the more powerful the Savica waterfall is. We recommend a visit in nice, sunny weather, if possible, soon after the rainy season. That is when the Savica waterfall is most prosperous. A lot of water that flows over the wall of Komarča, as well as the higher water supply for the Savica waterfall, has a higher water level and thus conjures up a beautiful and mighty scene. The Savica waterfall is also mighty during autumn rains and early spring, when snow melts in the mountains.

Interesting facts and history

France Prešeren, a Slovenian poet, also used the Savica Waterfall for the famous poem Krst pri Savici. The Savica waterfall is supplied with water from the wider karst area of the 500 m higher Black Lake. Among the waterfalls in the world, the Savica is a special feature, as the water flow is already divided into two strands in the hidden underground. The lower-lying right, 25 m high beam flows through an underground fissure from the higher-lying lake in the explored underground tunnel. The left, 78 m high beam also flows at the height of the same underground tunnel, but from an adjacent lake into which water flows from that pond from which water seeps down into the lower right beam.

Slap-Savica-razglednik.jpg
Slap-Savica-naravna-znamenitost-bohinja-2.jpg

Savica is a karst spring, waterfall and stream that flows into Lake Bohinj. The Savica stream has two original branches: Velika Savica, on which the Savica waterfall is located, and Mala Savica, which is of a torrential nature and flows southwest of Velika Savica during the rainy season. In the vicinity of Koča pri Savici, they merge and run on under the common name Savica. Before emptying into Lake Bohinj, the torrent stream Ukanška Suha joins the stream. The water never dries up, and the most beautiful is the Savica waterfall after heavy rains and in the spring when the snow melts. If there is a lot of snow, the water also rises above the spring during the day, and then the water falls over the 600-meter-high waterfall.

Hike to Savica

In winter, the tourist trail to the Savica waterfall is also arranged, but it can be closed in case of ice or thick snow. In spring, the promenade to the Savica waterfall is opened with a traditional hike to the Savica waterfall. The Savica waterfall hike - The route from Ribčev Laz is 11 kilometers long, and 5 kilometers from Ukanc. For the way back, they organize bus transport..
